Chaza Charafeddine’s “Divine Comedy” series, originally shown at Agial art gallery in 2010, is a visually rich and complex project, mixing her own photographic portraits of men incarnating both male and female sexes with 1940s Iranian, Indian, Afghani and Egyptian popular portrayals of mythological beings, and Mughal Islamic art from Persian and Turkish miniatures of the 16th to the 18th centuries.
The eponymous artist book extends this complex process by installing the artworks in a layout inspired by Islamic miniatures, adding rich backgrounds and frames, as well as the artist’s own hand-written texts.
Pushing further this play on modernity and tradition, the book is printed with state of the art cold foil technology, in partnership with Anis Commercial Printing Press, adopting a resolutely modern finish, and shining with gold foil on all artworks.
